Nusa Lembongan

Located off the south-eastern shore of Bali, Nusa Lembongan is a group of three small islands. The other two are Nusa Penida, larger and mostly inhabited by a local community of fishermen and seaweed farmers, and the smaller one Nusa Ceningan. In contrast with its two sister islands, Lembongan is heavily developed for tourism.

Only 8 kilometers long, we can comfortably walk or ride a pushbike to hang around. However the most popular transportation mode is motorbike. Other than small trucks mostly used by hotels and restaurants to transport their logistic, there are no cars in Nusa Lembongan. The theme for tourism here is obviously tropical beaches that includes various related activities like surfing, snorkeling, and scuba diving.

Unless if you hire a private chopper, the only way to reach Nusa Lembongan is by the sea. In general there are two options available. Public wooden boats departing from Sanur beach to the neighboring island of Nusa Penida take about 90 minutes. Be careful as these boats do not comply to any safety standards and in certain times are cruising over-capacity. The saver, quicker, and more comfortable way is to use fast boats that take only 30 minutes direct to Nusa Lembongan.

There are some other options actually, joining day-trip package provided by various excursion operators or book yourself at a hotel that provideĀ  private transfers. Of course, privately hiring a boat is always an alternative as well.

Nusa Lembongan and its sister islands Nusa Ceningan and Nusa Penida has a number of excellent spots for surfing, scuba diving, and snorkeling in addition to relaxing on the beach and swimming. There are a number of cafes and restaurants. Whist their price is in general slightly higher than Bali, it is still quite affordable especially if you intentionally choose to be cost conscious. Unlike Gili Islands in Lombok, most accommodation facilities in Nusa Lembongan are rather up-market.

For quite a small island, available choices are quite varied, from affordable huts to private villas. Whilst Lembongan villas are not as luxurious as their counterparts in Bali, they are still a comfortable private holiday accommodation that offer certain degree of luxury – including private swimming pool – and privacy.
