Wayang Orang
Wayang orang or Wayang Wong in Javanese language is playing human as wayang figures. Fitted with its name, this kind of wayang is not showing wayang dolls that usually made by buffalo skin or other leather materials but human replacing the wayang dolls. They are wearing accessories that used by leather wayang. Imitating face of leather wayang, wayang orang players are often drawing their faces by any paintings.
Wayang orang show is still exist now amongst the struck of modern age. One of wayang group is wayang orang Barata which can find in Pasar Senen area, Jakarta, Taman Mini Indonesia Indah or Sriwedari Park Solo. Wayang orang story cannot fit with modern story like ketoprak art due to wayang story reached hundred kinds of story. It covers any kinds of life aspects including coup and annexation. Wayang orang also performs any kinds of noble philosophy that teaching us about daily manners so it is usual if many parents bringing their children to watch this show. These Javanese philosophies wished to absorb by their young soul as well social culture of this tribe preserved.
Remained Wayang Orang groups are only three; two of them existed in Yogyakarta and Solo. Wayang Orang Bharata based in Jakarta as it is being benchmark of Wayang Orang tradition. Art group Wayang Orang Bharata tightly related with Wayang Orang Panca Murti Group which has been existed since 1963. This group centered in ‘real to theather’ building in Senen area, Central Jakarta. Now this building is renamed into Wayang Orang Bharata Building. Wayang Orang Bharata Group started to consistent in performing wayang orang tradition since it built until 1999 though it has ever broke in 1972. In the other side there are five groups of wayang orang that performed this art tradition in Jogjakarta style.
They are Pamulangan Beksa Sasita Mardawa Foundation, Siswa Among Beksa Group, Surya Kencana Art Group, Irama Tjitra Art Studio and Kridha Beksa Wirama Art Group. Wayang Orang is being masterpiece of kraton tradition as the richness of Jogjakarta culture. According to Cultural Office Jogjakarta, Wayang Wong Jogjakarta created by Sultan Hamengku Buwono I on 18th century and it reached its golden age at the reign of Sultan Hamengku Buwono VIII. Wayang Orang Jogkarta told the story of Ramayana and Mahabarata as well noble value of Javanese philosophy. Wayang Orang Jogjakarta also composed by Jogjakarta dance philosophy named Joged Mataram. Joged Mataram inspiration based on four foundations: Sawiji (Total concentration), Greged (Spirit), Sengguh (Confident) and Ora Mingkuh (Persistence). These four foundations lifted into philosophy of Jogjakarta value then it inspired the people character.
