Baduy

Baduy people are living amongst Sundanese in Lebak Regency, Banten. Baduy word itself gave by outsiders while a Holland researcher equalized this tribe with Badawi Arab group. In the other side it can be due to the existing of Baduy River and Baduy Mountain in the northern side of this area. However they called themselves as Kanekes people in accord with their area name. Kanekes lies in the hill of Kendeng Mountain in Kanekes Village, Leuwidar District, Lebak-Rangkasbitung Regency, Banten.

This village is about 40 km from Rangkasbitung city. In their daily activities, this tribe spoke Sunda language with Sunda-Banten dialect but they are also can speak Indonesia language fluently. Baduy tribe composed by three different groups named tangtu, panamping, and dangka. Tangtu group recognized as Baduy Dalam. Baduy Dalam people are the strictest group in walking their custom while they are usually wearing white and blue clothes and white headband. Baduy Luar or Panamping group can identify through their black clothes with black headband.

Baduy Dalam people still can be finding in Cibeo, Cikartawana, and Cikeusik while Baduy Luar peole are still staying in the border of Baduy Dalam village like Cikadu, Kaduketuk, Kadukolot, Gajeboh, Cisagu, and others. Baduy Luar people preferred to stay outside Kanekes area in Padawaras (Cibengkung) and Sirahdayeuh (Cihandam) village. They have their own belief as it called Sunda Wiwitan but later it is getting influence of other religion like Islam, Budha, and Hindu. Though the world has changed but Kanekes people are always holding their pure belief as they show absolute custom rule without any changes. Baduy people usually worked as farmers and selling fruits.
