This tribe known as the cultural ethnic of Malay but spoke also honoring Minangkabau custom. They lived in West Sumatra, half of Riau province, northern Bengkulu, western Jambi, southern North Sumatra, southwest of Aceh, and Negeri Sembilan,Malay. Minang people practicing matrilineal custom breathing strong Islam influence. It reflected by the Minang custom sounds Adat basandi syara’, syara’ basandi Kitabullah (Adat bersendikan hukum, hukum bersendikan Alqur’an).
Minangkabau people reached its high achievement in trading activities both as intellectual and professionals. Most of them were living in the big cities like Jakarta, Bandung, Pekanbaru, Medan, Batam, Palembang, and Surabaya. While others living abroad in Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia, and Singapore. Their cooking known as Padang cuisine that was famous in Indonesia even foreigner like this. Minang people believed as Deutro Malay people who migrated from South China land to the Sumatra Island around 2.500-2.000 years ago. Minangkabau custom system applied two kinds custom in harmony. Datuk Perpatih inherited democratic Bodi Caniago system while Datuk Ketumanggungan inherited aristocratic Koto Piliang custom system.
Minangkabau custom had propped by three pillars of alim ulama, cerdik pandai, and ninik mamak. They called Tali nan Tigo Sapilin helped each other equally in governing Minangkabau people, Padang. Minangkabau people growing many kind dances and art for wedding ceremony or custom ceremony like pasambahan dance and piring dance. While martial arts of Minang called Silek or Silat Minangkabau. Minang people had tought to be smart in remaining their dignity without weapon or physic contact. They are emphasizing art of speaking through 3 genre of pasambahan (offering), indang, and salawat dulang. Their art of speaking was majoring satire, allegory, metaphor, and aphorism.
Minangkabau house called Rumah Gadang. It built on the family land on the tribes hereditary. This house shaped on rectangle and divided into two parts both front and back side. Usually it made by wood and its roof shaped like buffalo horn. The roof made by palm fiber but now it using zinc. Only women, husband, and kids who stay in rumah gadang. While single men slept in mosque. Minang people wedding is a new moment to men in their new environment. The wedding ceremony called baralek. It starts with maminang, manjapuik marapulai until basandiang. Then the wedding ceremony will adapt Islam procedures which take place in mosque. Even Minang people have impressive tradition, they does not close theirself to the outside world. Some of them pushed their child who usually in teens age to wander. Families which has wandering tradition have relations in some big cities. Half of their earning delivered to their home town who developed family asset. Many of them being great people in cultural subject.
